Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to our new blog. We are LGI Farms, which is an operation that is just beginning. Through this blog, you will get to watch a company begin and grow. Our name, LGI, stands for Learn.Grow.Inspire.

LGI Farms is owned and operated by myself, James Matthew Craighead, and my wife Amanda Scott Craighead.

I grew up in Moss, TN. In high school I helped my father and grandparents on the farm. One of my earliest memories is of me following a tobacco setter. In high school I was extremely active in FFA, in which I served as chapter treasurer for two years. Summers were spent either on the farm fencing and baling hay, or working for my father's small contracting business. Summers for me always meant hot, hard, skilled manual labor which is something I will always be glad for. It taught me the work ethic I apply to myself today. I went on to college at TN Tech, where I received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Agriculture with a concentration in Agricultural Engineering. Amanda and I got married and moved back home in 2011, and since then we have been slowly building our way to starting our farming adventure. We have spent the last year and a half studying and researching every scrap of information we can find on anything related to agriculture. We have been studying, planning, and preparing for the chance to start our own farm.

Amanda grew up on Pea Ridge TN. Her childhood, like mine, was filled with memories of farming tobacco and cattle. In high school she served with me on the chapter FFA officer team as V.P. and then President. She went to college at TN Tech, where she recieved a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Agriculture with a concentration in Agricultural Education. She did her student teaching at Macon County High School, recieved her teaching liscense, and is currently completing her first year as a teacher at Gallatin High School. Teaching and helping kids is Amanda's passion in life.

2013 is going to be a big year here at LGI. We are going to build the framework that the upcoming years will rest upon. We are going to build infrastructure and herds, establish crops, and make ourselves known in the local market. We are starting with a small cattle herd and adding sheep, hogs, chickens, and bees. We are going to start with traditional marketing, and gradually move into direct marketing. We are going to produce the highest quality product possible with focus on using the safest practices availible.

We will also strive to advocate for agriculture. Farmers are starting to be viewed in a negative light, and I intend to help change that. One of our biggest policies is going to be openness, so if you have a question, Ask! If you want to see something drop by and we will show you! If you want to just come to the farm and hang out, come right ahead!

Thank You to everyone who drops by this blog. We will do our best to provide you with informative, well written, entertaining posts. If you have a topic you wish discussed, let me know and I will post about it. Comments are always welcome, and feedback helps us.
